Have you ever listened to a musical...without knowing what the musical is about....and without any idea how the stories relate? Well, I did. With Stephen Sondheim "Company." I listen to the entire album all the time because 1) It's pure genius and 2) Raul Esparza in the revival cast rocks. And of course, I formed my own visions of what the story was like. BOY WAS I WRONG. Yesterday, I watched the revival cast performance on DVD, and I literally fell in love with it. But, I was completely wrong in my assumptions. It's funny when you hear a song in the show and you say out loud "Ahhhhh. That DOES make more sense than what I thought." But after viewing this show, it has become one of my favorites. Also, I love how the revival cast did this interpretation. The original show takes place in the 70s, and therefore is fitting because in one scene, the people are stoned and in another is a hippie-like scene about sexual experimentation. However, the revival cast brought it into modern times, where the whole cast wears suits and business attire. Genius. It shows how the ideas mentioned in this show are universal and not just ones to be associated with the 1970s. I personally think that Raul , after seeing this, is one of the best actors on Broadway. His ability to make his acting so natural and so comedic yet dramatic is astounding. LOVE HIM. LOVE COMPANY. SO MUCH.
